  • What is the gastric balloon?
  • The gastric balloon procedure performed by the endoscopic method is a procedure that helps people with excess weight to lose weight.


  • To whom is performed?
  • Gastric balloon method; It is applied to moderately obese and overweight people who cannot lose weight despite trying different diets, and who are prepared for obesity surgery to lose weight before the operation. It can also be applied rarely to patients who are slightly overweight and not accepted for surgery.


  • What type of gastric balloon is used?
  • Depending on the duration of treatment, there are two types of gastric balloons performed adjustably in 6 and 12 months.  The reason it is named as adjustable is that its volume and size can be changed according to the needs of each patient.


  • How much weight is lost with gastric balloon?
  • Depending on their initial weight, most patients can lose 10-30% of their total body weight with the gastric balloon method.


  • How gastric balloon procedure is performed?
  • First of all, it should be noted that the gastric balloon is not an operation. The procedure is endoscopically performed under general anesthesia or light sleep status, by inserting a fist-sized balloon into the stomach through the patient's mouth. The process takes about 15 minutes. Since there is no surgical procedure, the patient is discharged on the same day and returns to his normal life the next day.
  • What awaits me after the gastric balloon is inserted?
  • A few days after the procedure, the patient may feel pain, nausea and vomiting. This is normal. These complaints spontaneously disappear after three to four days. Because of the balloon, your appetite decreases, and you feel less desire to eat.


  • Can I eat whatever I want after my gastric balloon?
  • No. The first week after the procedure is fed only with liquid food. In the second week, mash feeding is started. For later, the dietician creates a special diet plan for you. It is very important to follow the diet plan to get successful results from the gastric balloon procedure.


  • What should I pay attention to after the gastric balloon procedure?
  • Use your medication for nausea, vomiting and pain regularly and carefully.
  • Follow the diet list strictly.
  • Avoid heavy exercise for two to three weeks after the procedure.
  • Do not skip your doctor and dietician follow-up.
  • Pay attention to solid-liquid separation in your diet. Do not drink liquids half an hour before and after meals.
  • Stop consuming carbonated beverages.


  • How is the gastric balloon removed?
  • It is very important to remove the balloon on time. Again, the procedure is performed endoscopically, by emptying the balloon and removing it after been deflated . This process also takes about 15 minutes.


  • Will the gastric balloon burst inside me?
  • The stomach balloon does not burst. However, it can be pierced due to the excess of some acids in the stomach or external factors. This is a very small possibility. Against this possibility, the inside of the balloon is filled with a colored substance that does not cause any harm to the body. If puncture occurs, the color of your urine will turn green or blue. In such a case, you should consult your doctor as soon as possible.
