  • What is prominent ear?
  • Prominent ear is congenital and is the most common deformity in the ear. It is caused by the insufficient development of the cartilage fold in the bucket part of the ear. When the cartilage area cannot develop sufficiently, the angle between it and the skull becomes wider and this causes the ear to be protruding. The prominent ear does not correct itself, surgery is required.

  • To whom it is performed?
  • The prominent ear does not cause any adverse health effects. However, the appearance may disturb people. While women with prominent ears can cover their ears with their hair, men with short hair do not have such a chance. This surgery is performed on people who have prominent ears and are uncomfortable with this condition. It is recommended that the surgery should be performed after the age of 18. For breast feeder women, prominent ear surgery is not recommended to be performed.

  • Can prominent ear be corrected?
  • Prominent ear can be corrected non-operatively if the person is less than six years old. However, after the age of six, its correction can only be performed surgically. In prominent ear surgery, it is aimed to reach a reasonable distance between the person's ears and the skull.

  • How is prominent ear surgery performed?
  • The surgery is performed under local or general anesthesia. General anesthesia makes the operation conditions more comfortable for both patient and the physician. During the operation, an incision is made in the posterior part of the ear and the excess skin and cartilage tissue that causes the ear to take the shape of a bucket is removed. After this procedure, the ear is positioned closer to the head. The ear area is covered by applying stitches and dressings.

  • What should be considered before the operation?
  • + Physician should be informed about the treatment under use.
  • + In case of requested blood tests and examinations, patient is required to do not delay them until last days before surgery.
  • + Blood thinners like aspirin should be avoid one week before the surgery.
  • + Smoking and alcohol should be stopped two weeks before the surgery.
  • + Patient should be fastening for six hours before the procedure. And the least amount of water should be consumed.

  • For how long the surgery takes?
  • Prominent ear surgeries are usually completed in 1-1.5 hours. However, if a different aesthetic intervention has to be performed on the ear, the duration of the surgery will be slightly longer.
  • Is it a painful surgery?
  • There will be mild pain after the operation. It is easily controlled with painkillers. There is no serious pain that affects the daily life of the patient.

  • What awaits me after the surgery?
  • There is no need to stay in the hospital after prominent ear surgery. A band should be worn on the head for three weeks after the operation. Control and dressing are required three and 15 days after the surgery. There is no need of removing stitches. It is normal to have edema and bruises in the operation area. Edema and bruises begin to disappear 3-4 days after surgery.

  • What should be considered after the operation?
  • -  The tape requested by the physician should not be removed from your head.
  • -  Prescribed medication should be regularly used.
  • -  Patient will be requested to sleep in head-up position for 3-4 days after surgery in order to reduce bruising and edema.
  • - Three days after surgery shower can be taken.
  • - Heavy sports should not be exercised for a month after the operation.
  • - Movements and heavy lifting that could cause impact to your ear area should be avoided.

  • Will be there any left stitch marks after the operation?
  • The advantage of prominent ear surgery is that the incision is applied behind the ear. Therefore, the scar that will occur after surgery is not in a visible area and does not disturb the patient. The scar almost disappears with the time after the surgery.

  • When is the best time for surgery?
  • Prominent ear surgeries can be performed in all seasons. However, the period other than summer months provides a more comfortable post-operative period.

  • When can I go back to normal life?
  • If you are not doing heavy work, you can return to work three days after the operation and to a normal life one month later.
